6th Grade Counselor- Ms. Roxane Lopez
Sixth grade is an exciting time for middle school students. They are coming into a brand new environment---a new building and new people. Sixth grade students should be looking forward to making new friends, learning new routines, challenging themselves academically and participating in many extracurricular activities. Although these new developments are exciting, they can be stressful at first as students ask themselves, "Will I fit in?" "Who will I eat lunch with" "Will I get a lot of homework?" Along with our amazing sixth grade teaching staff, I am here to help! I am looking forward to meeting each of my incoming sixth graders.
I am here to help!
.Please use your counselor as a resource! I work daily with students on academic and personal needs. I collaborate with administrators, teachers, students and parents to problem solve on a vast array of issues. My main role is to be an advocate for my seventh grade students but I also provide system support for all students. My role in system support includes being the 504 facilitator for my grade level, and the Kealing Ambassadors Coordinator.
A little about me:
I have lived in Austin for the last nine years. I enjoy being active in my church, dancing salsa and two step, kayaking, tennis, reading fiction, watching movies, and traveling.
I grew up as a migrant student moving from Crystal City, Texas to Deckerville, Michigan every year. That means, I had to change schools every year in the middle of the school year, which brought a host of challenges. I often had to make new friends every time I came back to Texas. In high school, it was more difficult academically because each school was at a different point in their curriculum when I would arrive and each state has different curriculum standards. My experience as a migrant student is what compelled me to become an educator and later a counselor.
I am loving working as a counselor at Kealing. I continue to learn and grow in this profession along with my students. Since the counselors follow the same cohort of students, I feel really fortunate to be able to continue to forge relationships with my students as they go through Kealing!
