The Kealing Guidance Department is making presentations to all 7th grade students through advisory beginning on September 19th thru the 21st. The goal is to instruct them on how they could “Be the One” to help a friend who is struggling with depression or hurting themselves. The presentation explains the symptoms of depression, signs of depression or suicidal thought in another person, ways to help friends cope if they are sad or possibly struggling with depression and finally when and how to get help from adults. Counselors encouraged all students to tell an adult if someone expressed thoughts of hurting themselves; this includes telling their parents, especially if they learn of a student’s thoughts outside of the school setting.
Counselors also shared with students the number to call a help hotline, the National Suicide Prevention LifeLine, at 1 (800) 273- TALK. or to text CONNECT to 741741 to chat with a crisis counselor. Please feel free to pass this information onto others. If your student communicates to you that one of their friends is having suicidal thoughts. Please either contact their parents or the police, who have mental health officers that can check on them in their home. All it takes is one person to “Be the One” to save another’s life.
